Our History
History
In 1960, Bob Martin and Frank Bayley formed a partnership and began opening Big John supermarkets in small Southern Illinois towns, eventually branching out to Kentucky and Tennessee. Their first convenience store was opened in 1974 in Grayville, IL and was named “HUCK’S”.
Today, Martin & Bayley, Inc. operates over 130 HUCK’S locations across Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Through innovative strategies, dedicated effort, and a forward-looking vision, the company has become one of the most financially stable enterprises in the nation, employing over 2,500 people.
In March 2001, the Martin & Bayley families sold the company to its employees, transforming it into a 100% employee-owned organization, which has fostered a strong sense of ownership and dedication among its workforce.
Established in 2005, the Karing for Kids (KFK) Charitable Fund by Huck’s aims to brighten the Christmas experience for underprivileged children, and it has grown annually to extend support throughout the entire year.
